Special Terrace floors in bamboo – the benefits

Floor Forum International N° 136, March 2024

MOSO® Bamboo, increasingly first choice for decking

Durable and solid at the same time: these are two conditions that often come up when choosing a new indoor or patio floor. More and more installers, but also end customers, are looking for innovative alternatives and are increasingly considering the use of bamboo, a material that is gaining popularity. Anyone looking for flooring and wall cladding made of bamboo will soon come across MOSO®, an absolute reference and specialist in the bamboo sector for years. Together with Edwin van Houten, Sales Manager and Bregina Broersma, Sales Support Benelux at MOSO®, we take a look at the use of bamboo in decking. "Bamboo is increasingly casting itself as a sustainable yet high-performance alternative to tropical hardwood," the duo say in chorus.

MOSO® bamboo decking
When the Dutch company MOSO® was founded in 1997, the range of products made of bamboo was limited to two floorboards. However, the pioneer in the bamboo sector has not been idle since then. The range of bamboo flooring for indoor installations continued to expand and was complemented by cladding, decking, panels, veneers and beams for indoor and outdoor applications, among others.

One of the notable achievements in recent years is the range of decking made of bamboo. "When our indoor bamboo flooring range was on point, we sensed that the market was ripe for an outdoor segment," Edwin looks back. A terrace is an important part of a garden and is a place where a lot of time is spent. Not surprisingly, the use of sustainable materials has also found its way into terraces. Wooden terraces are popular thanks to their natural look and are an absolute eye-catcher in more and more gardens.

MOSO® Bamboo X-treme®: new generation decking
A MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® is the ideal enrichment for a garden, a balcony or a roof terrace. Bamboo X-treme® boards are made to last a lifetime and, as with hardwood, the end-user has the choice of appearance and finish. "Thanks to a special Thermo-Density® production process, we at MOSO® create durable planks that are now used in many climates worldwide. This unique modification process ensures the highest durability class within EU legislation, making the exceptionally stable planks impervious to mould and micro-organisms," clarifies Bregina Broersma, Sales Support Benelux at MOSO®. In less than 10 years, the progressive company has already provided an area of no less than 6 million m² with its bamboo decking.
More reasons to choose certified Bamboo X-treme® decking? The decking boards from the Bamboo X-treme® collection offer an attractive alternative to (tropical) hardwood, combining durability, aesthetics and environmental friendliness. Made from fast-growing MOSO® bamboo, a renewable resource that does not cause deforestation, these boards are designed for outdoor applications. An impressive added bonus? The 25-year guarantee.

MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® decking boards come in different versions, depending on the intended project and appearance: ribbed / smooth, V-grooved / brushed / non-slip / Curved / Hungarian point / terrace tiles / various widths. For example, Curved decking boards, which are slightly curved and planed, offer some practical advantages: water runs off immediately to the side, making the boards less likely to get dirty and dry faster. In addition, these Curved deck boards from MOSO® offer the advantage that no slope is required during installation.

Easy installation and maintenance
Thanks to the symmetrical shape of the side profile, MOSO® decking boards can be installed quickly and easily with supplied MOSO® clips, without pre-drilling.
The boards have a brown to dark brown colour when installed and will take on a lighter shade after a few weeks. However, the discolouration does not affect the quality and strength of the boards. The surface simply becomes slightly rougher. Without maintenance, the material will grey completely due to UV radiation. For maintenance and cleaning, MOSO® points towards the products Woca Exterior Wood Oil and Woca Exterior Wood Cleaner.

Why bamboo: sustainable, CO2-neutral and resistant
Bamboo, a fast-growing plant with properties of hardwood, offers several advantages as a material. Besides its natural beauty and appearance, bamboo exhibits high stability due to the way the strips are glued together. This can be done horizontally or vertically together or pressed together under higher pressure, resulting in less swelling and shrinkage. MOSO® bamboo products are durable and high quality, with properties such as fire resistance and hardness equivalent or even superior to those of most hardwoods and other building materials. Certifications confirm the durability and resistance of MOSO® bamboo, making it suitable for a variety of applications, including outdoor use.
Durability is inherent in bamboo as a material, which is further supported by its harvesting process and intrinsic properties. The bamboo plant grows rapidly and can be harvested annually without reducing the size of the forest. An LCA analysis shows that most MOSO® Bamboo Products are CO2 neutral over their lifetime, thanks to the sustainable nature of bamboo itself. The rapid growth of bamboo contributes to CO2 uptake during growth, making it an eco-friendly choice with significant environmental benefits.
