Special Cladding with wood, bamboo or composite

Floor Forum International N° 137, May 2024

MOSO® Bamboo, application in cladding increasingly popular
In previous issues of Floor Forum International, we explored the rising popularity of bamboo. The sustainable material is increasingly the number one choice for applications such as indoor flooring and terrace flooring. In recent years, bamboo has also been increasingly used as cladding and as an alternative to tropical hardwood or synthetic materials. Edwin van Houten, Sales Manager and Bregina Broersma, Sales Support Benelux at MOSO® are excellently placed to tell more about how bamboo is also finding its way into facades and about the advantages the material offers as facade cladding. After all, MOSO® is the reference in the bamboo sector and a progressive player that is taking applications with bamboo to new heights. "Bamboo is a great choice for those who want a facade with a natural look," says Edwin.

MOSO® cladding made of bamboo

Dutch company MOSO® was founded in 1997 and over the years has emerged as an absolute tastemaker within the bamboo sector. The company started with two bamboo floorboards and systematically expanded its range to include bamboo flooring, decking, panels, veneer, beams for indoor and outdoor applications and... panels for wall cladding.

By definition, a facade has to endure a lot. Just think of wind, rain, cold, frost, dust and, in the worst case, flames in the event of a fire in an adjacent building. In addition, aesthetic factors are very important for a facade. A façade is the signboard of a home, a business or a shop. Those who choose the material for their façade cladding should not take any chances.

Bamboo offers several advantages over other cladding materials. First of all, bamboo has a natural appearance. In addition, bamboo has high stability as well as high hardness. Its fire-resistant properties are also very good. "MOSO® bamboo products are also CO2-neutral and thus contribute to a sustainable way of building. The LEED and BREEAM certifications are concrete proof of this," says Edwin.

MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® Cladding

The most talked-about bamboo cladding collection is undoubtedly MOSO® Bamboo X-treme®. The MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® cladding board is a solid board for exterior applications and is made of bamboo strips that are pressed and thermally modified at a temperature of 200°C. This Thermo-Density® process gives the MOSO Bamboo X-treme collection of wall boards the highest possible durability class and fire safety class B-s1-d0 (EN 13501-1).

Like any wood species, Bamboo X-treme® will age over time through exposure to weathering. A beautiful, natural look will emerge, giving the façade an elegant and authentic appearance.

Success story: "Schoonschip", floating community in Amsterdam

MOSO® bamboo can now be found just about all over the world in many different applications, both for an outdoor use and in interiors. One of the most high-profile projects the Dutch firm delivered in its own country. The "Schoonschip" project in Amsterdam consists of a sustainable, floating village, which is right up MOSO®'s alley for sustainability and innovation.

The village has 30 houseboats and the architects were looking for sustainable and high-quality materials with aesthetic appeal. Many residents opted for bamboo, among other things because of its fire-resistant properties. MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® can be found as cladding on several of the houseboats.

MOSO® Bamboo cladding, installation and maintenance

In applications with bamboo, there are often doubts about how to install and maintain it. MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® Cladding boards are available in different versions that can be installed with clips, screws or the Grad installation system.

The Grad installation system is a patented and unique solution to quickly and easily install Bamboo X-treme® Cladding on aluminium rails with hidden and removable clips. The system allows for very detailed lines in the design. Installation on the Grad system makes the cladding circular and future-proof, as the cladding boards and installation system can be easily separated and recycled.

The icing on the cake? "The MOSO® Bamboo X-treme® Cladding does not require any periodic maintenance. The cladding boards will, however, age slightly. However, this does not affect the long durability of bamboo (product warranty of 25 years). With a maintenance oil it may be possible to retain the brown colour," Bregina clarifies.
